Scenes of carnage as car crashes and flips over 'into parked vehicle and a home'

A car crashed and flipped over into a parked vehicle and terraced home last night, it is reported.

At least one ambulance, a fire engine and several police cars raced to a collision on the quiet street in Hayes, West London at roughly 9pm.

Footage shared to social media shows the mangled wreckage of an overturned car, just feet away from the front of a house.

Two people were treated at the scene and damage was found to a building, said the Metropolitan Police.

Firefighters also helped to remove a person trapped in the wreckage, according to an eyewitness who said: "Crazy scenes, car flipped over and collided into multiple vehicles and a home."

The car also appeared to smash into another vehicle parked on the driveway, reports MyLondon.

Pictures suggest the crash happened near a mini roundabout, with police saying road closures are in place.

A force spokesperson said last night: "Police were called shortly after 21:00hrs on Thursday, 15 December to reports of a collision involving two cars on Shakespeare Avenue in Hayes.

"Officers attended and found an overturned car and damage to a building.

"Emergency services remain in attendance. Two people have been treated at the scene. Road closures are in place."

The cause of the crash remains unclear, but it comes as drivers are warned to take care on icy roads amid freezing conditions across the South East.

When driving on ice, Direct Line says: "If your car starts to skid, for example, it's vital not to panic and hit the brakes.

"Calmly take your foot off the accelerator and turn your car into the direction of the skid. Once the car straightens, steer along the road."

However, if you start to skid when driving down a steep hill, motorists should put their cars in third or fourth gear to prevent them from losing control, rather than in first.

Black ice, which can be almost undetectable, leads to tyre grip being massively reduced and it taking a lot longer to brake.

The spokesperson added: "Driving in the winter months is about preparation and precaution. Don’t drive too fast, and be aware of the specific hazards each wintry condition brings."

You should also keep a safe distance between yourself and the car in front, because stopping distance is 10 times greater than in normal conditions.

You should still brake as gently as possible, because normal tyres will have a lower grip on icy roads.

Car expert Ollie Green of Collect Service Go said: "The best way to decelerate is by changing gears as this will avoid loss of traction and control.

"If you do feel yourself starting to drift off on the ice and you need to reduce speed, ease off the throttle and straighten the steering for a moment to allow the tyres to regain grip.

"However, avoid braking as this will cause you to spin."
