Scene remains in place on Salford street after bomb squad carry out controlled explosion

A scene remains in place on a Salford street where a bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion.

Dozens of residents were evacuated from their homes on Wednesday (June 17) after a suspicious package was found at a block of flats in Worsley Road, Eccles.

A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Police were first called to the street on Wednesday morning after receiving a report of concern for the welfare of a man.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said they saw about eight police cars swoop on the scene before officers removed a man from one of the properties in an “agitated state”.

A large police cordon was put in place on the street as bomb disposal officers were called to detonate the package at a nearby car park.

The nature of the contents have not yet been confirmed.

Video footage from the scene showed the moment the explosion took place.

A police officer could be heard saying 'take cover,' before a loud bang.

Several minutes later, a second package was detonated by the bomb disposal unit, followed by a third.
