Scene of devastation after Mercedes ploughs into traffic light

This was the scene on a busy Salford road after a car ploughed into a traffic light.

Emergency services were called to Regent Road tonight, following a crash involving two cars.

The collision, which appeared to involve a black Mercedes and another vehicle, happened at the junction with Oldfield Road, near Sainsbury's.

No injures were reported, the fire service said.

Police and the ambulance service were also called to the scene, just before 9pm tonight (Friday).

The crash is causing delays, with traffic backing up to the Mancunian Way.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 8.54pm one fire engine from Salford responded to a road traffic collision on Regent Road in Salford.

"No people were trapped in any vehicles, but smoke and fuel were reported so firefighters are making the scene safe for the public, and colleagues from GMP and NWAS who are both in attendance."

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: "Congestion on Regent Road westbound, extending onto Mancunian Way.

"This is due an RTC.

"Road blocked with traffic being filtered through slowly.

"If you're heading this way, please seek an alternative route."
