Scene of destruction at Sainsbury's petrol station after ramraiders steal tractor to smash through wall

This is the scene of destruction left behind after ramraiders used a stolen tractor to smash through a wall at a Sainsbury's petrol station.

Police were called to the scene on Cricketers Way in Westhoughton, Bolton , at around 4am on Tuesday morning.

A huge chunk of the wall of the petrol station had been smashed and part of the roof had collapsed.

The offenders used a tractor to destroy the wall, in an attempt to get into to the building.

It is believed that no money or stock was taken - but the shop was severely damaged.

The tractor was abandoned at the scene.

Just a short time earlier, a tractor was stolen from a farm on Wingates Lane in Wingates.

Police are treating the two incidents as linked.

No arrests have yet been made.

A police car remained at the scene throughout Tuesday and the petrol station was cordoned off with tape. 

A GMP spokesperson said: "At around 4.09am this morning (27 August 2019), police were called to reports of a burglary at Sainsbury's Petrol station on Cricketers way in Westhoughton, Bolton. 

"The offenders drove a tractor into the petrol station in an attempt to gain access to the building. 

"A short time earlier a tractor was stolen from a farm on Wingates Lane in Wingates, Bolton. 

"At this time police are treating the two incidents as linked. 

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: “There was an incident at our Westhoughton petrol station and we’re supporting the police with their investigation.

"We’re working to re-open as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
