June 08--Scattered thunderstorms and warmer temperatures are expected for much of the Chicago area Monday.
Storms will develop over southern Wisconsin about noon Monday and then move south toward the Chicago area and northwest Indiana by about 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The scattered thunderstorms are expected to taper off by early Monday evening but could be severe in some areas, bringing quarter-size hail and winds of up to 60 mph, according to the weather service.
Temperatures will continue to climb throughout the week, with highs reaching the lower 80s Monday. Highs could reach almost 90 degrees by Wednesday before dipping back into the high 70s on Thursday, but the summerlike temperatures will bring the chance of showers and thunderstorms throughout the week.
Parts of central Illinois saw much heavier rainfall Sunday into Monday, with flash flood warnings still in effect Monday for Vermillion and Champaign counties. Estimates of up to six inches of rain have fallen along and north of Interstate 74 since Sunday evening, according to the weather service.
Warm, muggy weather brought severe thunderstorms to areas from Kankakee to Peoria, according to WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling.
Winds of up to 80 miles per hour, rain and golf-ball sized hail blasted the portions of the area, downing trees and power lines, and a tornado was sighted near DeMotte, Ind., in northwest Jasper County.
