'Scary big' RAF plane passes low over Glasgow while carrying out essential training

While flights to and from Glasgow Airport returning to near-normal frequency, Glaswegians have been taken by surprise at the sight of a 'scary big' RAF plane flying over the city this afternoon.

The plane in question was a C-17 Globemaster, which circled the skies on a few occasions while engaging in essential training - performing various 'touch and go' landings at Glasgow Airport.

The RAF advised this morning that the huge plane, based out of RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, would be flying in both the Glasgow area and also in the vicinity of Prestwick Airport today.

RAF Brize Norton tweeted: "This afternoon, our C-17 Globemaster aircraft is expected to be operating in the vicinity of Glasgow, and Prestwick, whilst engaged in essential training."

The C-17 is a longrange, heavy-lift strategic transport aircraft that normally performs tactical and strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world.

One person who spotted the plane above the city took to Twitter to call it "a bit of a beast", while another wrote that it was a "scary big f***er".

It's one of many flights that have taken to the skies over Glasgow in recent months - which the RAF have noted have been 'necessary and routine' and not connected to the fight against coronavirus.
