Scarlett Moffatt admits faking illnesses so she could stay off school with mum Betty

Scarlett Moffatt has admitted that she missed her mum so much when she was a little girl that she'd fake illnesses so she could stay home from school.

The former Gogglebox star and I'm A Celebrity winner is standing firmly by her mum's side after it emerged Betty had taken "thousands" from her bank accounts to fund her online gambling addiction.

The 30-year-old has since explained how close they've always been.

Daily Star reports she said: "If she was off, I’d pretend to be ill. I used to put my hand near the light bulb and touch my face so it was hot and have a day off."

Last month it was revealed that Betty, who starred on Channel 4 show Gogglebox with her daughter, had stolen money from Scarlett's bank accounts while working as her PA ever since her 2016 I'm A Celeb victory.

After throwing thousands of pounds a week of her own money into her addiction, she desperately turned to Scarlett's accounts.

She continued taking the money with the belief she'd be able to pay it all back with a big win.

A source told The Sun at the time that Scarlett felt "betrayed and confused".

They added: "But once Betty broke down and explained what had happened Scarlett couldn't have been more supportive."

Scarlett arranged for her mum to go to rehab and her dad Mark also rallied around his wife to support her.

The source added: "Scarlett has done lots of research into the perils of online gambling and hopes that by this story coming out she and Betty can help others in a similar position.

"She's determined to come out the other side and for some good to emerge from this heartbreaking situation."

A separate source told the Mirror that the family are supporting Betty through her post-rehab treatment.
