Unlike most actors who turn their talents to song-writing, Scarlett Johansson’s musical career has been a legitimate success among critics; which is perhaps why she’s venturing into new territory, and has formed a pop group called The Singles.

Featuring Este from pop-rock siblings Haim, XL signee Holly Miranda, New York songwriter Julia Haltigan and soul singer Kendra Morris, “the idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls,” explains Johansson of her group.

She cites the likes of Grimes, the Bangles and the Go-Go’s as inspiration. “I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra-pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”

This isn’t just wishful thinking, however. A first single, Candy, is available to purchase now. Their shimmering debut was produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, who previously worked with Johansson on her Tom Waits album. Including lyrics such as “I love your dreamy stare” and “sugar sugar sugar sugar pour it over me”, it surpasses her saccharine promise.

Her latest sugar-based endeavours follow her brand partnership with SodaStream - an endorsement deal which caused contention back in 2014 after the film star and former Oxfam ambassador was questioned over her decision to promote a company which headquartered in Israel and has a controversial factory in a settlement on the West Bank.
