Scarlets promote Welsh coach to prominent role as Brad Mooar edges closer to finalising backroom staff

The Scarlets have announced Dai Flanagan's promotion to the role of backs coach at the region for the 2019/20 season.

Flanagan has been in the setup at Parc y Scarlets for a number of years, working most recently as a coach under former attack coach Stephen Jones, who will follow Wayne Pivac to the Wales fold later this year.

The 33-year-old is highly-regarded by those at the region and this show of faith in a Welsh coach will be well-received by the fans.

After a playing career that took him to Cardiff Blues, Ospreys and Pontypridd, Flanagan was brought in by the Scarlets as a skills coach in 2014.

He was appointed as interim backs coach for a period under Pivac before the region secured Jones' services.

Flanagan has worked with teams at various levels within the region and has been part of the Wales under-20s setup for the last 18 months, though he is not thought to be travelling the the World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina this summer.

“I spoke to Brad when he was here in December and we got on really well. We saw the game the same way, especially from an attack and backs point of view," said Flanagan.

“It is important we don’t go away from the values the Scarlets have. We need to stick with what the Scarlets are good at, that is playing an open brand of exciting rugby and getting your best players on the ball as much as possible."

With current forwards coach Ioan Cunningham also on board next year, Flanagan's appointment should ensure that the Scarlets stay attached in some way to their identity.

Incoming head coach Brad Mooar, whose backroom team is almost finalised, has assembled a mix of new and old faces in the coaching box.

Flanagan is looking forward to getting started.

He added: "You watch the Crusaders play, you can see their attacking intent and I am sure we will continue in that vein under Brad.

“We have had two very successful seasons before this one, which has been challenging.

“Our challenge is to learn from that and to kick on and get back to where we were."

Flanagan's appointment follows the news that Kiwi Glenn Delaney will be coming on board as defence coach.

Cryptically, the Scarlets say that there is one further appointment still to be announced and the region have been heavily linked with Gloucester Head of Academy Richard Whiffin.
