Scarlets 28-28 Edinburgh: Wales new boy stands out but Welsh side hit by late Scottish comeback

The Scarlets saw a 14-point lead with five minutes to play wiped out as Edinburgh forced a 28-28 draw in an entertaining final game of the season.

Two tries from Kieran Hardy and one apiece from man-of-the-match Tom Rogers and Dafydd Hughes appeared to have put the Welsh side on course for victory.

But the visitors hit back with converted scores from Jack Blain and Boan Venter, adding to touchdowns from Marshall Sykes and Jamie Ritchie, securing them a share of the spoils in front of the first crowd at a Welsh rugby match this term after the relaxation of Welsh government restrictions.

Around 1,000 supporters witnessed the Rainbow Cup match.

They saw excellent performances from Wales squad members Rogers and Hardy.

Playing at full-back, Rogers created one of Hardy’s scores, and as well as crossing himself the youngster looked safe under the high ball, quick and creative. There is a school of thought that No. 15 could eventually prove his best position and the events of this game didn’t disprove that theory.

Whatever, he looks a gem of a player.

Hardy was good, too, alert and fast in all he did.

But, ultimately, the Scarlets couldn’t put the game to bed and will not be sorry to see a line drawn under the season.

Pieter Scholtz, Uzair Cassiem and Jac Morgan were all playing their final games for the Llanelli-based region before heading off for pastures new.

Rogers set up the first score with a half-break and an inside pass that put Hardy over, only for Edinburgh to counter through lock Sykes.

Back came the hosts through Rogers, with Hardy returning the favour to his mate after a quick tapped penalty before sending the youngster away on a 30-metre run to the line.

Ahead 14-7 at the break, the Scarlets introduced Wales prop Samson Lee early in the second half for his first game since December, with the crowd favourite replacing Scholtz.

With Blain in the sinbin, Hardy went over for his second, then Hughes made it on to the scoreboard with the game looking up for Edinburgh.

But they weren't done.

Blain returned from the bin to score, before Venter touched down with the last play of the game to earn the Scots a draw.
