‘Scared of the unknown’: shops and businesses react to news of Nottinghamshire Tier 3 talks

Local businesses have spoken out about the news that the Government is to hold talks over local lockdown restrictions in the county this week.

It comes after Matt Hancock said in his statement to the Commons on Monday that Nottinghamshire would be part of "discussions" this week over restrictions.

The Health Secretary confirmed the news when announcing Lancashire was being placed under Tier 3 restrictions.

"This week further discussions are planned with South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, the North East and Teesside," he added.

Councillor David Mellen, the leader of Nottingham City Council, said he would urge the Government to come up with "a package that properly protects local people, businesses, jobs and education, whether it’s for Tier 2 or Tier 3".

Gemma Cropley, owner of The Flower Shop, Beeston, said: “We don’t know what it will be like in another lockdown. Since Tier 2 there’s not as many people about, people aren’t coming into the shop as much.

“I think people are avoiding coming out. It’s just being scared of the unknown about what’s going on.

“I think we should have had a two-week full lockdown stop the spread of the virus."

Gemma said that although the shop couldn’t get flowers for three weeks during the national lockdown, after that they were “busier than normal” with many people sending flowers to loved ones.

She added: “People aren’t keeping their distance now in shops so I think there do need to be more restrictions.”

Charmaine Rhalla, manager at One Stop in Carlton, said: “We think more restrictions are needed, people still aren’t taking it seriously enough.

“We’ve seen a massive decline in trade over the last few weeks but people are doing their best to stay safe.

“The local community are elderly and they are starting to panic again.

“We did our absolute best for them in the national lockdown to make sure everybody had what they needed.

“We have had a few cases locally so we have been doing deliveries again.”

She said too many people are “flouting the rules” and that the restrictions need to be harsher.

She added: “It is absolutely needed. We aren’t worried about more restrictions because we had an increase in trade last time because people weren’t going to the big supermarkets.”

Brenda Masson owner of The Grange Bed and Breakfast in Elton, right on the Nottinghamshire border, said: “I’ve just got to accept it and go with the flow, we will open up if and when we can.

“Some people might get more financial help in Tier 3 but I don’t think it’ll make much difference for us.

“I’m thinking about closing now until next year so I can put my own mind at rest.”

When asked about the whole county being placed under restrictions, Brenda added: “It’s all for one and one for all, if there’s a rule, we’ve got to do as we are told.

“It is sad for everybody.”

A spokesman at Johns Decorating Centre in Woodborough Road, said: “We would have to go down to reduced staff again as we did during the lockdown period.

“We would have to look at if our trade centre shop would have to shut down but during the first lockdown we did stay open before for trade only. We don’t have too much concern around new restrictions.”
