Scapegoat

One of the festival's greatest pleasures is getting your first glimpse of companies who you just know have got a great future. Wishbone is undoubtedly one such company. Its lovely little show has an appealing intimacy and is as original as it is engaging.

Scapegoat follows Stella and Pete as they holiday in a remote place where there are more goats than people. When the pair part company, Pete goes off alone on a walking holiday and Stella falls in with the local garage owner and his jealous wife.

It is not so much the story itself that is interesting as the way it is told. The staging employs a screen that divides into three, allowing the audience to view the action from strange and often revealing perspectives. It is amazing how much emotional nuance can be gleaned merely from two pairs of feet or an arm.

This fascinating technique is never just a gimmick. The way the story is told reflects the fragmented lives of the protagonists, the uncertainty of their emotional states, and the way some intense experiences seem heightened, almost filmic.

The piece is very slight, but that is part of the charm of Wishbone's wryly funny show.
