Scammers used AI to try to defraud family in desperate search for missing dog

  • A Florida family was targeted by scammers who used AI-generated images to falsely claim their lost Beagle mix, Archer, was injured and needed emergency surgery.
  • The scammers demanded nearly $2,800 upfront and sent photos of Archer on an operating table, but inconsistencies like an outdated X-ray and the “vet clinic” address being Deltona City Hall exposed the deception.
  • After realizing it was a scam, owner Bill Cosens received help from a neighbor who tracked down a woman seen picking up Archer.
  • Archer was safely returned home to the Cosens family on Thursday morning, physically and emotionally worn out but unharmed.
  • This incident highlights a growing trend where criminals monitor social media 'lost pet' posts and use AI to create fake, emotionally charged situations to extort money from vulnerable owners; the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
