Scammers target families over free school meals during the coronavirus crisis

Parents are being warned about a scam targeting families receiving free school meals.

Heartless scammers have sent a message to parents saying they should forward their bank details to receive support.

But Durham County Council has issued a message saying warning them it is a scam.

In the warning, shared by St Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre, in Peterlee, it states: “Message from Durham Local Authority: We have been informed that some parents have received an email stating the following:

‘As schools will be closing, if you're entitled to free school meals, please send your bank details and we'll make sure you're supported’.

I would just like to confirm this is a scam email and is not from the local authority. We urge you and parents that if you receive any emails like this, please do not respond and delete it immediately. Please could you ensure all parents are informed about this issue.”

Durham Constabulary has also issued a warning to parents about the scam via Facebook.
