'Scammers started renting out my driveway for cash without my knowledge'

Homeowners have taken to social media to complain after seeing their driveways illegally listed on a rentals website.

One customer found her parking space up for rent on Just Park - which allows people to let their spaces out to other drivers across the UK.

Around 3.5million users use Just Park a year - but it's emerged that some listings could be completely fraudulent.

Simon Gallagher said it started with a complaint from his tenants in Bexleyheath, Greater London.

They claimed members of the public were using up their spaces - leaving them with nowhere to park.

"This was going on for about a month or so", Simon told the BBC, "until one day somebody had left a note in the window of one of the cars that was parked there with a booking reference for Just Park".

"I looked it up on the website and to my surprise, found a photograph of the flat advertised out for rent".

Simon discovered fraudsters were renting out his parking bays for £8 a day.

In Edinburgh, Barbara Oliver returned from holiday to discover a stranger parked outside her garage door.

"It appeared that these people had used Just Park and had information to say that they could park there, which, as the property's owner, I knew was not true", she said.

It's since transpired that crooks are listing people's parking spaces on the Just Park website for extra cash - without anyone's permission.

The company removed the unauthorised adverts after Barbara Oliver and Simon Gallagher complained.

However, when asked about the fraud, it said such cases are "extremely rare".

Just Park's founder and chief executive officer, Anthony Eskinazi, told the BBC: "I'd like to apologise to Mrs Oliver and Mr Gallagher for their experiences.

"We do have stringent checks in place to prevent spaces from being listed fraudulently. On rare occasions where they are added, we immediately remove them once notified and ensure that our community is not adversely affected".

Just Park said its policies and procedures have successfully reduced instances of fraud to "less than two listings per month, which represents less than one out of every 1,000 new listings".

It added that new space owners cannot withdraw funds for at least 48 hours after the first booking.
