Scammers pretending to be smoke alarm testers robbing Glasgow homes

Scammers pretending to be testing smoke alarms or checking water supplies are using the ruse to access Glasgow homes to rob them.

A warning has been issued after reports of the criminals operating in Kennishead and in the south of the city.

Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) bosses have warned that they are looking to check appliances and may claim to be from the association, the council or fire brigade.

While the robbers can target anyone, the over-60s are considered most at risk.

GHA issued safety advice to residents and said in a statement: "Bogus callers have been reported in Kennishead and around the south of Glasgow.

"They are asking to check water supplies or smoke alarms and may claim to work for GHA, the council or the fire services.

"Remember, don’t let strangers into your home - and always ask to see their ID badge. If in doubt, keep them out."

A stark warning online from the housing association told locals to use door chains if they have them, not let strangers in, not to give keys to workmen and never be bullied into letting someone in.

GHA added: "Bogus callers are criminals who claim to be someone they’re not to get into your home.

"They could target anyone at any time, but they often focus on the over-60s.

"They’ll often pretend to be from GHA, a council department or a utility company.

"What they want to do is steal your money and valuables."
