Scam warning as NI couple stop to help men 'stranded on motorway'

Holiday makers are being urged to be vigilant after a couple from Northern Ireland were scammed out of almost €500 whilst returning from holidays.

The couple from Strabane, Co Tyrone , were travelling home from Europe when they came across two males 'stranded on the motorway'.

The distressed men explained to the couple they were also from Northern Ireland and needed money to get the boat home.

After handing over almost €500 to the pair, the couple exchanged contact details and the men agreed they would repay the money when they got home.

To date the generous couple haven't received any money and the address they were provided with was bogus.

Highlighting the case, Scamwise NI said: "Although this couple were full of good intentions; we would advise taking extra care when approached by strangers."

Sinn Fein Councillor for Mid Tyrone Pádraigin Kelly has urged everyone to be vigilant when approached by strangers asking for money either online, in person or over the phone.

She said: "We live in an ever advancing technological world and financial fraud seems to be ever growing. I encourage everyone to be extra safe whilst travelling and when approached by anyone asking for money either in person, online or over the phone.

"Cold callers are becoming more prominent and it's up to each and every one of us to look out for our neighbours and friends. Be extra vigilant around your own community and look out for one another."
