Scam warning after man approaches people asking them to pay for fuel to visit dad at The Christie

A fraudster has conned people out of money in south Manchester by pretending he needs to buy petrol to visit his sick dad in hospital.

The man has told his victims his dad is receiving treatment for a heart attack at The Christie, a cancer treatment centre in Withington.

Police said the man has targeted people 'near' the hospital, but did not confirm where.

When the victims have stated they have no cash, he has escorted them to the nearest cash machine to withdraw money.

Police posted about the scam on a local Facebook page on Sunday evening.

The status, put up on GMP Fallowfield, Withington, Levenshulme and Burnage, said: "A male is approaching people near The Christie hospital stating his dad is in the hospital due to a heart attack and asking them in a distressed state to pay for fuel to help see his dad.

"When they have no cash, he is taking them to the nearest cash machine to withdraw and hand over cash to him."

Officers urged people to refrain from handing over money to the man, and to call police instead.

Anyone who has been targeted is asked to contact police on 101, or via the GMP website.
