Thirty-seven victims of an investment scam, known as the "I Makeover" investment programme, have recovered around 6.8 million baht in accordance with a Civil Court ruling, Pol Maj Gen Preecha Charoensahayanon, acting secretary-general of the Anti-Money Laundering Office said on Tuesday.
The court found that the victims had been fraudulently enticed by a gang led by Jenkij Kaewrunkham into investing their money for a promised return of 10% per month in their investments, Pol Maj Gen Preecha said.
On top of the 10%, the victims were promised a 5% commission on any initial amounts invested by new investors they could persuade to join the scheme, he said.
They were also offered a further 10% of any returns that these members might see, he said.
After a short period of time, Mr Jenkij and the gang stopped paying the promised returns and cut off all contact with members, said Pol Maj Gen Preecha.
The money returned to the defrauded members came from cash seized from six bank accounts owned by Mr Jenkij and the gang, he said.
The gang advertised their scam as an investment in the foreign exchange market, he said.
Pol Maj Gen Preecha said more seizures of assets owned by other people found involved in this investment scam are expected later.
Any accomplices, including those who received money or assets transferred to them as part of the gang's money laundering, will also face charges, he said.
