The Supreme Court has issued a notice to comedians Samay Raina, Vipun Goyal and three others in a petition over their alleged insensitive jokes on persons with disabilities, according to LiveLaw.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh reportedly directed the Mumbai police commissioner to issue a notice to them to ensure they are in court on the next date of hearing. The court also sought the presence of the Attorney General for India to assist the court considering the “sensitivity and importance of the issue raised”.
In its petition, Cure SMA India Foundation reportedly said there should be regulations for the broadcast of such online content which violates the right to life and dignity of the persons with disabilities.
The court had said it wanted to regulate objectionable content on social media after the foundation had initially objected to YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia's case pertaining to the India’s Got Latent controversy. The petition linked to Raina has come after the court directed the petitioner to file a comprehensive petition, LiveLaw reported.
