SC initiates suo motu contempt case against Chandigarh journalist

The Supreme Court has initiated a suo motu criminal contempt case against Chandigarh-based journalist and YouTuber Ajay Shukla, reportedly over comments made against a judge, Bar and Bench reported.

This marks the first instance this year where the apex court has taken suo motu cognisance of alleged contemptuous content without a formal complaint being filed.

While the court has not officially specified which remarks triggered the action, Shukla’s recent posts on his YouTube channel are reportedly under scrutiny. In a video uploaded around the time of Justice Bela M Trivedi’s retirement, Shukla reportedly referred to the judge as “godi” – a politically charged term often used to accuse individuals of pro-government bias.

The case is scheduled for hearing on Friday before a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai.
