NAGPUR: Sayali Wani of Nashik and Chinmaya Somaiya of TST rallied superbly to stun top seeded women and men paddlers to clinch the second Maharashtra State Ranking table tennis tournament titles at the Subhedar Hall on Sunday. The five-day ranking event is organized by Nagpur District Table Tennis Association under the aegis of Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association.
While sixth seeded Sayali defeated Thane's Shruti Amrute 4-2, third seed Chinmaya got the better of his Mumbai's district mate Jash Modi 7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 2-11, 11-8, 11-8 in an exciting summit clash.
The day however gave an end to the campaign of Nagpur's top seeded paddler Jennifer Varghese in the U-19 girls' singles event. Having failed to adjust to the atmosphere, Jennifer lost her second-round contest to Thane's Riana Boota 6-11, 11-8, 7-11, 4-11. Jennifer will now try to regain the momentum when she starts her campaign in the U-17 girls' singles category from Monday.
Unseeded Adi Chitnis is the lone city paddler remaining in the fray. In the U-19 boys singles quarterfinal, Aadi made light work of Sanskar Basak from TST 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.
Later, Sanjay Potnis distributed the prizes to the men and women podium finishers.
