Say cheers to Ken Behrens one last time

When Capital Brewing poured the first Ken Behrens beer back in late August they never expected it to outlast lockdown.

As pubs and restaurants are preparing to re-open on October 15, so too is Capital preparing to brew the final batch of the bright pink berry sour.

They've sold more than 25 kegs of it, that's about 1250 litres, and it's available this week for the last time, as part of the popular crowler pack.

So say goodbye to Ken, with a $70 deal that includes three 960ml crowlers - the Ken Behrens, a Brew New Zealand NZ Hazy IPA and an OMG Smoothie Sour - in the ninth crowler pack of lockdown.

Capital brewer Adrian Graeber said the popularity of the beer took the team by surprise.

"We were confident that the recipe would appeal to the average Ken Behren palate but the success of the beer was probably more than we were expecting," he said, as the brew team hatched the final batch.

The first batch sold out in less than 24 hours when it hit the shelves. The sour was concocted with a new Philly Sour yeast strain and a small truckload of raspberries and blackberries to give this beer its huge berry aroma, unique colour and balance to the sour yeast.

Graeber said it had been great to be part of the Canberra community throughout lockdown.

"Canberra is the best kept secret in Australia and a funny subtitle mishap was a nice reminder of that," he said.

"The community really rallied around the joke and the beer was a nice way of celebrating the good nature of your average Ken Behren."

The tap room at Dairy Road has been booked solid for the opening weekend.

Graeber said the team was looking forward to knock-off beers with a full house.

"Sitting in an empty brewery by ourselves with that last beer of the day doesn't have the same appeal," he said.

And you can be sure the team has kept a little Ken Behrens as the perfect toast.

Order a crowler pack at capitalbrewing.co and if there's any left you might find it on tap when the tap room opens on October 15.
