Savvy shopper shows how to unlock a trolley when you don't have £1 or a token

Arriving at the supermarket to do your weekly shop only to realise you haven't got a pound coin or token handy has happened to the best of us.

Instead of cramming a week's worth of shopping into a basket, there's a simple hack to release a trolley and get you on your way.

One savvy shopper has come to the rescue of many forgetful supermarket customers on the Latest Deals, Extreme Couponing & Bargains Facebook group.

They wrote: "Just a Sunday tip... If you don't have a pound coin or a trolley coin put 2 20s together & boom it will work."

Unfortunately, there is a bit of catch - literally, reports the Mirror.

Some members of the group were keen to try the tip while others had already tried and tested it only to realise the two coins often got stuck.

One said: "When I went to asda last week, someone had tried the 20p trick in 2 trolleys and they were stuck, so 2 rows of trolleys were unusable on a Saturday afternoon"

Another said: "I tried the 2 20ps and no luck. Might have just been me though"

Other members added more ways to access a trolley without coins or tokens that seem to be more reliable:

"I learnt today you can do the same with a key. if you have one similar size to a pound with a round head it will release the trolley too. did it today when had no change on me!"

While another wrote: "I found an old pound coin, works a treat and can't spend it, so it's always there"

One group member suggested a useful way to make use of those euros you can't exchange, writing that a "euro also works".

The most popular suggestion seemed to be to use your house key: "I use the back of my key! Works wonders"

If you forget your keys though, you may have to bite the bullet and stuff a basket with your shopping.
