Savvy road workers make 'oven-baked' chicken and pies using hot tarmac

Two quick-witted road workers have found a solution to enjoy a budget hot meal without spending a fortune.

Martin Crompton, 50, and his work buddy John Webb, 46, came up with an idea to heat up food in their custom-made oven - by burying them in a pile of fresh tar.

The pair have been working together for over 30 years laying tar around the roads of Greater Manchester.

As lunchtime approaches, John prepares the meal as he covers the pies under a blanket of hot tar.

Then 20 minutes later, John digs out the foil package to reveal a piping hot pie.

He takes big bite before sharing it with his colleagues.

Some days John would even do a simple roast and lay a whole chicken in.

They said they either lay the food covered in foil on the road or fill a wheelbarrow with hot tar and place it inside.

John even shared his tips and said: "Pies and soup take 15 minutes, eggs takes 18 minutes and bacon and sausage take 20 minutes.

"I would recommend people to use tar to cook their food as it's only like using an old way of cooking, like with hot rocks.

"But anything that would take longer than 20 minutes would have to be swapped into fresh tar."
