Savvy mum shares 14p hack for unblocking toilets that 'everyone needs to know'

If you’ve ever had to tackle a blocked toilet, you will know it is the most unpleasant tasks. But someone has to do it, and it's usually not the culprit - who will have already fled from the scene of their toilet crime. You might be tempted to don a biohazard suit and mask, but there are far quicker ways to deal with stubborn blockages.

TikTok mum @Capricesmum has flushed out over 900 comments on her post about a nifty method to unblock toilets. It’s so simple, she claims, and does the job. Even more impressively, it involves just one household item that everyone will have in their kitchen and costs around 14p per use.

"My brother taught me this & it works EVERYTIME," she says, adding that "every house needs to know this hack when you get a blocked toilet".

Revealing just how simple the trick is, she explains: "You get some washing up liquid and squirt at the back of the pan like this, leave for 30 seconds to a minute, simply flush and the blockage is gone."

The savvy mum added in the comments that the washing up liquid works as a lubricant, helping blockages pass through the toilet with ease. You can pick up a bottle of washing up liquid for 70p, making this a cost-friendly hack.

Her video has attracted hundreds of comments, some familiar with her method, others with their own suggestions, and many more with their own sorry tales of mishaps around blocked toilets.

"Washing up liquid seems to fix everything!" one commenter wrote.

It wasn't new for some, as another added: "It works better with hot water. I’ve been doing this for years."

Even the professionals have taken note: "I have been a plumber for 20 years in Sydney Australia I have spent 50k on drain clearing equipment wen all I needed was soap wow" said one.

Spare a thought for this TikToker, who admitted: "Wish I saw this before I stuck my hand in the toilet."

"Am I the only one who uses old coat hangers?" said one commenter, while another asked: "Am I the only one who get branches out the garden."
