Save money with new back-to-school website that offers second-hand clothes

You can save money on back to school clothes and other items with a new Irish website that offers good as new second-hand products.

Caroline Mullion founded Skoolstuff.ie when her son started secondary school last year. She got a list of the uniform requirements from the school and she quickly noticed that it was going to cost her quite a lot of money if she bought everything new.

Some schools require formal uniforms such as blazers or kilts, as well as PE uniforms. Then there are afterschool sport clothes such as GAA and rugby kits, meaning parents could be spending hundreds on school clothing.

Caroline told Dublin Live: “I set up my own marketplace that's for school related items including sports clothes and musical instruments. A school blazer can cost anything from €75 to €150 if you buy it new. On Skoolstuff.ie you can get them for €15, €20 up to €50 depending on the condition.

“There are items that are free. People just want to find a new home for their old stuff. It’s hundreds if you’re going to buy everything new and on top of the rising costs at the moment, buying new school books, new shoes, runners, it all adds up very quickly.”

Skoolstuff.ie has really taken off in the past year. The website is free to use and you can place an advertisement on the site to sell items or even request the item that you need - and it’s great for the environment.

Caroline added: “Aside from saving money, it keeps clothes in circulation making it important for the circular economy. We’re reusing the clothing and the items that we have. Our children are all very aware of being environmentally friendly.

“You sign up with a username, password, email and address. It’s free to use and you can post ads. There’s a lot of school uniforms in the back of people's cupboards, so you can place an ad or put up a request.”
