Save Leith Walk project vision of street's future onto closed-down building

The building at the centre of the Save Leith Walk campaign was illuminated on Wednesday night, with a vision of how the street could look.

Shops have been disappearing from the building at Stead's Place as developers seek to turn it into a student flats and other properties.

Several businesses have had their leases brought to an end despite wanting to stay on, including the much-loved Leith Walk Cafe.

The planning application  was unanimously rejected at Edinburgh city council, but the decision is being appealed to the Scottish Government.

Save Leith Walk projected images of new shops and businesses onto the building on Wednesday night, making the case that it could still be used by the community.

The campaign group is launching an ambitious plan for a community buy-out of the shops, but much rests on the decision by the Scottish Ministers.

The group said: "‘Our Vision’ became a reality tonight!

"Community Right to Buy would allow us to secure the future of the block for all of Leith."
