‘Save Khajaguda Rocks’ activists gear up to file contempt petition

HYDERABAD: Activists involved in the ‘Save Khajaguda Rocks’ campaign are gearing up to file a contempt petition against the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) for taking up road laying works at the protected hill. Several activists gathered at the Khajaguda rocks on Sunday morning and erected boards citing the order of the Telangana high court from 2019.

Arun Vasireddy, an ecologist who has been part of the campaign, explained to media that a contempt of court case would be filed by the Society of Save Rocks against the HMDA on Monday.

The 2019 HC order made it clear that the Khajaguda Rocks which was declared as a ‘heritage precinct’ back in 1983 is to be protected. However, construction works, dumping of debris and expansion of a temple is happening in full swing, irking trekkers, climbers and nature lovers .

The court gave relief that around 15 acres of land which was owned by one of the petitioners can be exempted from the 189-acre area for construction purposes etc. With neither the 15 acres of land nor the rest of the 189-acre not being marked, construction works as well as drilling of rocks has been occurring unabatedly.
