Save hundreds of pounds on holiday bookings by waiting a few weeks to travel

Holidaymakers could save a massive £10.3million by avoiding travel during the peak three weeks of summer. Huge savings can be made by travelling towards the end of the school summer holidays instead of a getaway at the start of the long break.

New research from GoCompare travel insurance has revealed by booking flights during the second half of the six-week school break, rather than the first half, UK holidaymakers can make noticeable savings. In practical terms, travellers can expect to pay £97 less per person by strategically timing their getaway.

This year, those journeying to Spain – Britain’s most popular destination – can expect to save 20 per cent on flights when travelling in the last week of summer. For a family of four, this amounts to an incredible £188 off travel costs, according to data sourced from Skyscanner.

When jetting off to the USA - the nation's second favourite destination - a family of four could save a staggering £872, as flights during the last week of August are 30 per cent cheaper compared with the second week of August. Some 40 per cent of holidaymakers also told GoCompare they aren’t planning on purchasing travel insurance.

Taking out cover this year is especially important as issues such as staff shortages force airlines to cancel hundreds of flights at short notice, leading to major holiday disruption for travellers. Ceri McMillan, travel insurance expert at GoCompare, said: “If you’re planning on getting away this year, we strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance so you won’t lose out if you’re affected by short-notice flight cancellations.

“While insurers often provide cover for cancellations, remember to check your policy carefully to make sure you’re fully protected. In many circumstances, the airline is expected to cover the costs of cancelled flights. However, if your accommodation is non-refundable and your holiday is disrupted, skipping on travel insurance could still be a particularly pricey mistake to make.”
