'Save Egyptian Halls' talk to take place in Glasgow

An event centred around the campaign to save the Egyptian Halls is to be held in Glasgow.

The Alexander Thomson Society is hosting the symposium at The Lighthouse on Friday February 21, and will be joined by a number of heritage organisations from across Scotland, including Historic Environment Scotland, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

A field of experts will gather to discuss its significance, condition and how it might be saved, examining other successful case studies of historic buildings that have been restored.

The A-listed masterpiece on Union Street has been vacant for 40 years. Built in 1872, the five-storey structure is regarded by many as Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson ’s finest work – designed in a classical style with an "unusual combination" of Greek, Egyptian and Assyrian detailing.

Upper and ground floors in the property are owned by separate companies – Union Street Developments and Union Street Properties – both run by Derek Souter alongside his brother Duncan and Kelvin Kerr.

In December, the building was shortlisted as one of Europe's 7 Most Endangered List by the pan-European heritage body, Europa Nostra – and an online petition set up following the announcement which has garnered over 4000 signatures.

Tickets for the event, taking place at The Lighthouse, are available to the public at £10 each.  They will be made available from the Society’s Eventbrite page from 9am Friday morning.
