Savannah State University in Georgia was put on lockdown after a shooting on Thursday night that left one person in hospital. Authorities later gave the all-clear.

Police were called to the scene after an incident that was reported to have taken place near the campus student union. Details were incomplete but campus safety officials said afterwards that there was no longer an active shooter on the campus.

Local media reported that a man was shot in the shoulder area during an argument. Bystanders came to his aid, applying pressure to the wound until first responders arrived.

The campus of the historically black university is located in the heart of Savannah, an Atlantic seaport that is Georgia’s oldest city and the seat of Chatham county.

The Savannah incident came a day after two television journalists were shot dead by a gunman during a live broadcast in Virginia and about two months after the 17 June fatal shooting of nine parishioners at a landmark African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.
