This weekend's women's middleweight world title bout between Savannah Marshall and Hannah Rankin has been called off after Marshall's trainer Peter Fury tested positive for Covid-19.

The British duo were due to go head to head for the vacant WBO belt behind closed doors at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle on Saturday night, but now a new date will have to be found for the contest.

"Unfortunately Savannah Marshall's trainer Peter Fury has tested positive for Covid-19," Matchroom Boxing said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

"Saturday's WBO middleweight title fight is off the card. All other fighters and teams tested negative.

"The fight will be rescheduled in due course and our best wishes are with Peter."

Fury - who is the uncle of two-time heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury - will now isolate for two weeks in line with Government protocol.

"It’s very regrettable that I tested positive for Covid-19," he tweeted.

"Good news @Savmarshall1tested negative. However due to the restrictions around a positive test, everyone must quarantine for 14 days. But #to reschedule ASAP."

Saturday's card in Newcastle will go ahead minus Marshall vs Rankin and is headlined by local favourite Lewis Ritson's WBA intercontinental super-lightweight title bout against Mexico's Miguel Vazquez.
