Savage landscape delivers again for Hobart painter Blowers

A painting of mine tailing ponds in Tasmania's north-west has won the public vote in this year's Glover art prize.

Savage Entropy by Hobart-based artist Nicholas Blowers won the People's Choice Award as well as the Children's Choice Award.

His painting depicts the landscape at Savage River, where an open-cut iron ore mine was established in 1965.

Blowers' work was chosen from 42 other finalists.

Glover prize curator Megan Dick said it was a special piece of art.

"Even though it is about the landscape at the end of its life and there are often parts of the landscape that are damaged in his work, there is an underlying beauty about his paintings," she said.

"Also it's just very well painted. Technically he's a very accomplished artist.

"I first told him that he'd won the People's Choice Award and he said 'oh, I didn't think the people liked me', and I said 'Nicholas, the people love you' and it turns out the children love him too, so he was very thrilled.

"I was quite surprised that the children and the adults basically voted for the same prize but clearly the children are far more sophisticated than maybe we give them credit for."

It's the second time Blowers has won the People's Choice award, with his work Savage Ponds chosen in 2016.

Earlier this month, Ponies, an eerie painting of a children's playground at Launceston's Cataract Gorge by Halinka Orszulok, won the Glover Prize.

About 10,000 people visited the exhibition over the last two weekends.

"The Glover Prize has such a huge community engagement and to have 10,000 people coming through an exhibition is really significant numbers for any show, be it in Tasmania or on the mainland," Ms Dick said.

"I think it's wonderful how the community have embraced the Glover."

About 7,000 people cast their vote.
