Saughton Park fire: Neighbour claims blaze that nearly killed homeless man started by 'bored kids'

A woman living near Saughton Park, where a fire broke out yesterday evening (1 June), has blamed bored children for the blaze.

Posting a video of the towering flames and black smoke on Twitter, the woman, called Katie, said:

“Right time to get the kids back to school now boredom hitting them hard setting Saughton Enclosure ON FIRE.”

The fire which was first reported at around 7pm yesterday evening (Monday June 1) and flames quickly engulfed a shelter where a man was trapped.

Quick-thinking Kyle McAndrew, 32, risked his own life to save a homeless man with MS, who had taken shelter inside and was unable to escape, reported the Evening News.

Kyle said: "My instincts just kicked in when I saw a man lying there.

"The flames were engulfing the container and my only thought was getting him out of there."

He said he chased a group of youths aged 14 to 16 away from the scene, and believed they had been caught on CCTV.

Katie said her neighbour had also seen a group of children setting the fire, speaking to Edinburgh Live she said: “The fire was right at her garden fence. She told me it was started by a bunch of kids. She saw them.”

Police Scotland said in a statement: "Police enquiries are continuing into a fire in Saughton Park, Edinburgh on the evening of Monday 1 June, where a shelter and sporting equipment were set alight.

"The fire is being treated as wilful.

"The fire has been extinguished and no one was injured.

"Officers are currently following a number of lines of enquiry."
