Saudi-Iraqi Economic Cooperation Expected to Improve

Saudi King Salman receives Iraqi President Salih in Riyadh on Sunday. (SPA)

The Council of Saudi Chambers has expected the coming period to witness a surge in Saudi commodities and products into the Iraqi market.

Dr. Sami bin Abdullah Al-Abidi, Chairman of the Council, said that the coming period will witness greater activity and cooperation in bilateral trade between the two countries.

He lauded to Asharq Al-Awsat Saudi-Iraqi ties, especially on the economic level.

Abidi showcased both countries’ huge potentials that put them before a historic opportunity to build an effective partnership to achieve joint aspirations.

He stressed that the visit of Iraqi President Barham Salih to Saudi Arabia on Sunday affirms the great development of ties.

This visit would contribute to developing and reviving economic cooperation and trade exchange, added Abidi.

The evolution of economic ties between Riyadh and Baghdad would increase Saudi exports to Iraq.

Earlier, a number of agreements that bolster Saudi-Iraqi economic cooperation were signed including opening a crossing at the borders in which 85 percent of Saudi exports take place via land transportation through Kuwait and Jordan.

Saudi exports to Iraq in 2016 reached SAR2.3 billion (USD613.3 million) -- food commodities, construction materials, jewelry, chemicals, expensive metals and others are most exportable to the Iraqi market.
