Saudi Govt Underscores Need to Extend Iran Arms Embargo

King Salman chairs a cabinet meeting in Neom. (SPA)

The Saudi government stressed on Tuesday the importance of extending the arms embargo imposed on Iran given its ongoing armament of the Houthi militias in Yemen with sophisticated weapons and armed drones that are used to terrorize the people and attack the Kingdom.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz chaired the cabinet meeting that was held virtually from Neom amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The government expressed Saudi Arabia’s support for the international efforts aimed at ensuring that the Iranian regime does not develop nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles with the ultimate goal of guaranteeing that the Gulf remains free of weapons of mass destruction.

Such a goal also ensures that the independence and sovereignty of nations are respected, it added.

The cabinet reiterated the Kingdom’s support for the efforts of United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths to reach a comprehensive ceasefire in Yemen and kick of a comprehensive political process based on the three references: the Gulf initiative, national dialogue and UN Security Council resolution 2216.

It also underlined the need to continue to support efforts to resolve the crisis in Syria and embark a political path that would lead to a settlement and stability there. The settlement should ensure the safety of the people and protect them from terrorist and sectarian organizations that are hampering a real solution.

On Libya, the cabinet congratulated its authorities and people on the successful approval of a new National Unity Government. It said the Kingdom supports efforts aimed at reaching a political solution to the crisis that ensures the country’s security, stability, development, sovereignty and territorial integrity and deters foreign meddling in its affairs.

On the pandemic, the cabinet reviewed the latest local and international developments related to the outbreak. The ministers highlighted how the Kingdom continues to record a drop in new infections as it opens more vaccination centers throughout its territories.
