Saudi Foreign Minister: Int’l Efforts to Fight COVID-19 Started to Bear Fruit

Ghana became the first country in the world to receive vaccines acquired through the UN-backed COVAX initiative. UNICEF

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stressed on Wednesday that international efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic have started to bear fruit.

“During the Kingdom's presidency of the G20, we helped muster international efforts to combat COVID-19 and we are a major contributor to the COVAX scheme,” said the minister on Twitter.

“I'm pleased these efforts are starting to bear fruit and proud to see an important step with this delivery to Ghana today,” he added.

On Wednesday, Ghana became the first country in the world to receive vaccines acquired through the UN-backed COVAX initiative, with a delivery of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India.

Ghana is among 92 low-and middle-income countries that are receiving vaccines for free through the COVAX program, which aims to ensure wider access to vaccines around the world.
