Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah stressed on Wednesday that the Iran-backed Houthi militias’ failed attacks against the Kingdom target the lifeline of the global economy.
Speaking during a press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Riyadh, he said: “We reiterate our support to reaching a political solution to the crisis in Yemen.”
He also demanded that a “firm international stand be taken against the Houthi attacks,” citing the wide international condemnation of their attack on the Ras Tanura port.
“The priority in Yemen lies in reaching a comprehensive ceasefire,” he went on to say, stressing that the Saudi-led Arab coalition had declared a unilateral truce around a year ago.
“The international community has a great responsibility to pressure the Houthis,” Prince Faisal declared.
Moreover, he called on the United Nations to extend the arms embargo on Iran, reiterating Riyadh’s assertion that Tehran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, he underscored the strategic alliance between Saudi Arabia and Russia.
On Syria, Prince Faisal said Saudi Arabia support any effort to achieve stability in the war-torn country.
For his part, Lavrov stated that relations between Riyadh and Moscow are deep-rooted in several fields.
“We have a common interest with Saudi Arabia to combat the coronavirus pandemic,” he added.
He underlined the importance of stability in the Arab Gulf region, expressing Russia’s concern over the developments in Yemen.
Addressing Syria, he said Moscow is committed to its territorial integrity and independence.
Lavrov is on a tour of the Gulf that saw him visit the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday. He is also scheduled to travel to Qatar.
