Saudi Finance Minister's insight into why Newcastle United takeover means more than just investment

The takeover of Newcastle United will help the government of Saudi Arabia cope with the impact of the Covid-19 crisis.

The proposed buy-out of Mike Ashley by Amanda Staveley, The Reuben Brothers and the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, is currently going through the Premier League checks.

If passed, it would represent another large investment from the PiF which has been undertaken since Covid-19 crisis began.

The PiF have bought shares in Live Nation, Carnival Cruises, and oil company Equinor.

At a time when businesses are struggling due to the Coronavirus as most of the globe go through a lockdown, those at the PiF have decided to try and take advantage of falling valuations.

Yet despite the vast wealth within the PiF, the government of Saudi, like many others, is facing a decision when it comes to budget and revenue.

Reports earlier this week claimed that a decision had been taken to allow 'companies in the private sector to reduce salaries by 40%' - highlighting the issues facing the kingdom.

And with the fall in oil prices, there now appears a drive to invest in other industries in the hope that the returns can help fund the plan of action.

Speaking over the weekend, Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan when asked about overseas investment, said: "The investments are highly important because they have returns we can use in case of a crisis to curb the deficit.

"If we use the reserves, we consume the assets and won't have any returns.

“Also, these types of crises create investment opportunities.

"Many companies reduce their investments, which creates opportunities to invest in them."

As reported earlier this week - there have been no red flags raised during the Premier League checks.
