Saudi envoy defends human rights in the Kingdom

Saudi envoy defends human rights in the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia's 2015 appointment to head a key committee of the United Nation's Human Rights Council was highly criticised, with some pointing to the fact the Kingdom has not signed a number of UN human rights conventions.

In this web extra, Abdallah al-Mouallimi, the Saudi ambassador to the UN, defends the country's designation saying: "Everybody knew what we signed and did not sign, and based on that, we were elected."

When asked about the Saudi ban on women drivers, Mouallimi says: "I think women should be allowed to drive." But he adds: "I think this is a matter for society to ultimately decide."

Watch the first part of Mehdi Hasan's interview with Mouallimi, in which the ambassador discusses the ISIL and the Kingdom's involvement in Yemen and Syria.
