Saudi Doctors Fight Coronavirus Worldwide

More than a thousand Saudi doctors, spread around the world, confront the novel coronavirus, Asharq Al-Awsat

After graduating med school and before resuming their careers, new doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, an oath of ethics, which shapes the way they treat patients and uphold ethical standards.

As of January, specifically after the novel coronavirus began to spread around the world, healthcare professionals face a life-threatening challenge while preforming their duties. At that time, most of the countries were mobilized and prepared for the coming danger, as there are doctors in these countries from all over the world, including Saudi doctors.

The virus crisis worsened worldwide with some countries registering hundreds of thousands of cases.

Although the Saudi government allowed all of its citizens to return from abroad if they wanted to, Saudi doctors who work in hospitals around the world preferred not to return. They chose to commit to the oath they performed and the fight against the virus whatever the price.

The number of Saudi doctors who spread outside Saudi Arabia exceeds a thousand doctors who practice in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France.

In France, about 280 Saudi doctors participate in 35 different medical areas in the fight against COVID-19. They are present across the European country under French medical fellowship programs.

The French ambassador to Saudi Arabia expressed gratitude and praised Saudi Arabian doctors who stayed in France to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

In a video posted on the French embassy’s Twitter account, Francois Gouyette said the 250 doctors have displayed a “beautiful gesture of solidarity.”

“The courage demonstrated by these Saudi doctors is just amazing,” Gouyette said.

While in Germany, 650 Saudi doctors working in German hospitals decided to stay and face the pandemic, stressing their commitment to the ethical oath they took.

German Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Jörg Ranau tweeted: “I would like to thank the 650 Saudi doctors in German hospitals. They are our partners in fighting COVID-19 and deserve our highest recognition”
