Saudi Arabia registered on Friday 70 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total in the country to 344.

The health ministry said that some of the new cases are linked to people attending social occasions.

Eleven of the new patients had arrived from Morocco, India, Jordan, the Philippines, Britain, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. They were moved directly from the airport to quarantine, which has proven effective against the spread of the virus in the country.

Fifty-eight cases were linked to contact with other patients and attending social events, such as weddings, said the ministry.

Eight of the 344 patients have recovered and two are in critical condition.

The health ministry urged people to follow guidelines and preventative measures to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

The United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, suspended entry of citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states until the approval of the pre-examination mechanism, starting at midnight today, WAM said on Friday quoting the foreign ministry.
