Saudi Arabia intercepts drone armed with explosives heading for airport

Saudi Arabia's air defence forces intercepted a drone armed with explosives aimed at an airport.

The aircraft was launched by Yemen's Houthis, state news agency SPA said.

It had been targeting the airport in Jizan, close to the border with Yemen, SPA said while citing a statement from a Saudi-led coalition that has been battling the Houthis in Yemen.

SPA posted pictures of the drone wreckage on its Twitter feed.

Houthi-run Masirah TV said earlier today that the group had launched a drone strike on military hangars at the airport.

The Houthis ousted the Saudi-backed internationally recognized government from power in the Yemeni capital Sanaa in late 2014.

They have stepped up missile and drone attacks on Saudi cities in the past two weeks.

On Thursday, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement launched a drone attack on a Patriot missile battery in Najran's airport in Saudi Arabia, near the Yemeni border, the group’s Al-Masirah TV said.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said the drone was intercepted and destroyed by the kingdom’s air defences.

It was the third Houthi strike or attempt to strike Najran in a week, according to Saudi and Houthi reports.

"The royal Saudi air defence forces intercepted a drone laden with explosives (..) targeting the Najran regional airport which is used by thousands of civilians daily,” a spokesman of the Saudi-led coalition said, cited by the Saudi Press Agency.
