Saudi Arabia condemned Iran for violating Iraq’s sovereignty after it carried out missile attacks against bases housing American forces in the country.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel al-Jubeir urged Wednesday all parties to exercise restraint and ensure that the situation does not escalate further in order to safeguard the security and stability of Iraq and the region.

Saudi Arabia is closely watching the situation in Iraq and is seeking to make sure it does not slip into war, he said in a tweet.

The Kingdom will stand by Iraq to help it overcome all threats and so that its people can live in prosperity and security, he stressed.

Iran carried out its missile strike in retaliation to Washington’s killing of its top military commander, Qassem Soleimani, two weeks ago. No casualties were reported in the attack that stoked fears of the eruption of a new war in the region. The United States has since imposed new sanctions against Tehran.
