Saudi Arabia Calls on OPEC+ to Be Vigilant as Virus Spreads

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. (SPA)

The OPEC+ group of oil producers should be vigilant and cautious amid the emergence of the new variant of coronavirus, Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said on Monday.

“We must remain vigilant and pro-active in the face of new unwelcome developments,” he stated, urging caution in a generally optimistic environment.

“Don't put at risk what we have achieved for the sake of instant, illusionary benefit,” he continued before a meeting for OPEC+.

“Demand for fuels remain fragile,” he noted, warning that the new variant of the virus is “unpredictable”.

"In many parts of the world, where infection rates have increased worryingly, a new wave of lockdowns and restrictions are being put in place, which will inevitably impact the rate of economic recovery in those countries," said Prince Abdulaziz.
