Saudi air defenses on Wednesday intercepted a ballistic missile fired by the Iran-backed Houthi insurgents from Yemen’s Saada province towards Saudi territories, the spokesman for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen said.

‏Col. Turki al-Maliki explained that the missile was heading towards the city of Jazan and was deliberately launched to target civilian and populated areas.

“The Saudi Royal Air Defense Forces were able to intercept and destroy it,” he said. This resulted in missile fragments falling over residential districts without causing any injuries.

‏Maliki reiterated that Iran’s regime continues to support the Houthi militias through qualitative capabilities in a flagrant and explicit violation of UN resolutions 2216 and 2231 to threaten the security of Saudi Arabia as well as regional and international security.

He said the launch of ballistic missiles towards densely populated cities and villages is considered a violation of humanitarian international law.
