Saucy historical walking tour of Edinburgh reveals capital's rudest spots

If you're bored of the usual lovey-dovey Valentine's Day antics heading our way this weekend, you'll be pleased to know that Mercat Tours are offering up a saucy alternative.

Instead of hearts, roses and all things pink and fluffy, why not hear Edinburgh's history of lucrative drinking dens and brothels and hear stories of riotous nudity and bad behaviour?

On this special edition tour guests can discover the seedier side of Edinburgh's Old Town, including the tale of Mary Queen of Scots flashing as well as a visit to the trees that James Boswell climbed "for the rough pleasure of the bark".

Explore the lanes that hid the Old Town's darker establishments – and the furious spouses who discovered treachery there - and hear sordid stories of Edinburgh's most rampant residents.

For the last 30 minutes curl up in the cosy Megget’s Cellar for candlelit storytelling and a complimentary glass of fizz - something which we think sounds way more appealing than your usual dinner for two.

The hour-and-a-half long tour kicks off at 9.15pm on Valentine's Day and at 6.16pm Saturday 15 February, with tickets costing £18. Unsurprisingly, this tour is strictly over-16s only.
