Sauchiehall Street incident: Firearm and ammunition recovered from car stopped as part of intelligence-led operation

A firearm and ammunition has been recovered from a car in the city centre following a police operation.

Armed officers stopped the car on Sauchiehall Street around 6.30pm on Friday as part of an intelligence-led operation.

A firearm and ammunition was found inside the black Mazda 6 and a 55-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the find.

A red Volkswagen Golf was also stopped by officers as part of the same investigation around 7.10pm but no items were recovered and no arrests were made.

Detective Inspector Martin McGhee of Police Scotland's Specialist Crime Division said: "As part of an ongoing investigation, officers from Police Scotland have recovered a firearm and ammunition.

"I would urge anyone who may have information about the criminal use of firearms to contact Police Scotland on 101 or, alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The man arrested is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday August, 24. A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
