MAN OF THE DAY
Daniel Sturridge – one of the three symbols of the last time Liverpool fans were truly happy (and the only one of that attacking trio still at the club). Two crucial, crisp and manager-saving strikes.
GOAL OF THE DAY
Newcastle’s Ayoze Pérez, putting the wind right up José Mourinho with a neat one-touch-to-control, one-touch-to-volley-it-in combo.
BEST VALUE OF THE DAY
There were 42 cracks at goal in Leicester’s breathless match against Arsenal – averaging one every 2min 23sec.
FUTURE PUB QUIZ QUESTION
Who, on 26 September 2015, became the first player to score a hat-trick in the top divisions of Spain, Italy and England? Well played, Alexis Sánchez.
TACTICAL RED OF THE DAY
With Celtic’s home match against Hearts entering the last of three added minutes, and the visitors’ Sam Nicholson through on goal, Efe Ambrose cynically/fiendishly deliberately fouled the Hearts midfielder to earn a straight red. The subsequent free-kick was squandered and the game ended 0-0.
MOST RELIEVED MANAGER
No, not Brendan, but Terry Butcher, whose Newport County side – the only winless Football League team before Saturday’s matches – got their season off the mark with a mighty 1-0 win at Carlisle. They’re still bottom of League Two, though.
AND THE LEAST…
Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara said he was “no quitter” last week: “I don’t go into games thinking about losing my job.” A 2-1 defeat at 10-man St Johnstone took it out of his hands.
